What is counselling?
It's ok to be a little apprehensive about starting counselling if youv'e never experienced it before. I wanted to create this section to help you to understand what to expect.
There are many different reasons why you maybe looking for counselling, you may be feeling anxious, depressed, having relationship difficulties, loss, trauma, self-esteem issues, identity issues, attachment issues, stress, anger or other difficulties in processing and managing your thoughts and feelings.
Often it can be rare in life that we have the space to be able to reflect and process what is going on. Counselling is different from other support systems you may have in place. Counselling is not about being given advice, it is a completely unbiased space separate from the rest of your life in which you will be encouraged to reflect, make links and then choose the path you wish to follow.
I believe it is so important to feel comfortable with your counsellor. I aim to create a trusting relationship with you and provide a space in which you can talk about all aspects of your life without judgment or criticism.
There is no set way to "do counselling", you will be encouraged to talk about what has brought you to therapy, what is currently affecting you, your thoughts and feelings. Sometimes you might have a current concern you want to focus on, you may want to gain clarity, learn how to voice your thoughts, focus on your identity, process difficult feelings and traumatic experiences. The focus is always led by you and will go at your pace.
My main training is within Psychodynamic counselling which aims to look at how our early life experiences shape the way we view ourselves, the world and others in our lives. Psychodynamic focuses on unconscious processes that can be seen in our present behaviour. Insight and understanding is created through reflecting and drawing on these unconscious processes. I aim to draw on these patterns and encourage you to observe and reflect on your own thoughts, emotions and beliefs to help you to develop insight and understanding. Where appropriate I may draw on other models of therapy such as CBT.
Counselling can help with issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem, identity, sexuality, bereavement, loss, stress, relationship difficulties, attachment issues, work related stress, and anger.
I am able to offer both short term (6-10 session) and open ended long term therapy. I offer clients an initial meeting with no obligation to then continue counselling with me. I feel very strongly that it is the counselling relationship that helps to effect change so I think it is important to see whether you feel comfortable working with me. In this initial meeting we will explore what has brought you to counselling and whether short term or open ended is suitable.
Sessions will be at the same time each week and last 50 minutes.
My practice is based in a specifically converted building at my home based in the PE1 area of Peterborough. This is a separate building from the main house and offers a comfortable and confidential location for clients. There is free on road parking and a bus stop close by. Alternatively, if it is difficult for you to attend sessions physically I am able to offer online counselling using Zoom. There are session times available early morning or in the evening to help fit around those who work 9-5.

Session fees are £35-40 per session.
