EMDR Therapy- Healing through Reprocessing

Heal from Trauma with EMDR Therapy.
Find relief and reclaim your life with evidence-based Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.

What is EMDR?
EMDR is a powerful psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals process distressing memories, reduce emotional distress, and overcome trauma. This structured method allows the brain to reprocess traumatic experiences in a safe and supportive environment, reducing their emotional charge and impact.

Who Can Benefit from EMDR?
EMDR is effective for individuals experiencing:

  • PTSD and trauma

  • Anxiety and panic attacks

  • Depression

  • Phobias

  • Grief and loss

  • Performance anxiety

  • Chronic stress

How Does EMDR Work?
EMDR therapy follows a three-pronged approach to address past, present, and future experiences:

  • Past Events: Reprocessing distressing memories to reduce their emotional impact.

  • Present Triggers: Addressing current situations that cause distress and finding healthier coping mechanisms.

  • Future Outlook: Developing positive beliefs and responses to enhance resilience and prevent future distress.
During EMDR sessions, you will be asked to recall distressing experiences while engaging in guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. This process helps the brain reprocess difficult memories, enabling you to heal and move forward.

What to expect in an EMDR therapy session?

EMDR starts with 2-3 sessions of preparation before we start processing.

We will start with history taking. I will gather comprehensive information about your personal history, current challenges, and treatment goals. I will explore your past experiences, identify potential target memories for reprocessing, and assess how trauma has impacted your life. This phase helps create a tailored treatment plan and ensures a safe, structured approach to healing.

We then move onto preparation, in this phase I will work with you to develop essential coping skills and relaxation techniques to manage distress during and between sessions. This includes learning grounding exercises, mindfulness practices, and other self-regulation strategies that will help you feel safe and in control throughout the EMDR process. The goal is to build emotional resilience and establish a sense of stability before moving into deeper trauma processing.

After developing coping skills in the preparation phase, we move onto EMDR processing sessions. We will start by identifying specific memories for reprocessing. Together, we explore the emotions, body sensations, and negative beliefs tied to these experiences while establishing a positive belief to replace them. This sets the foundation for desensitisation, where, through bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, handheld buzzers or auditory tones, we work to reduce the emotional charge of these memories. As your brain processes the distressing material, you’ll find that the memories lose their intensity, making space for healing. Once this occurs, we shift to strengthening positive beliefs to replace negative thought patterns. This step reinforces self-worth and resilience, helping you integrate a healthier perspective into your daily life. Since trauma is often stored in the body, we then conduct a body scan to ensure no lingering tension or discomfort remains. If any distress is still present, we address and process it fully, ensuring both mind and body are aligned in healing. Every session concludes with grounding techniques to ensure you leave feeling calm and stable. If needed, I will guide you through relaxation exercises and coping strategies to manage any emotions between sessions. When we next meet we will reevaluate and asses your progress and determine if any unresolved material remains. Healing is a journey, and this phase ensures we continue working toward complete emotional well-being.

I'm currently working towards full accreditation in EMDR therapy, which is an exciting part of my journey as a therapist. As part of this process, I may ask to record some of our sessions, with your permission, so I can review them with my supervisor to support my learning and development. These recordings are kept completely confidential, used only for supervision, and always handled with care and in line with GDPR guidelines.

If you are interested in EMDR then please complete the form below and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Please fill in with as much detail as you feel ok to do so.

Please be aware that I am only able to offer sessions within my client hours.

Where possible EMDR sessions will be scheduled to be 60 mins in length to ensure enough time for processing. Sessions are ideally at the same time each week.

My fee is £45 per session, I review fees annually in April.
